Nursing Science Synthesis Synopsis Discussion Forum

Essential 1: Scientific Underpinnings for Practice

In The Essentials of Doctoral Education for Advanced Nursing Practice (2006), the AACN adopted a definition of nursing science as an entity in itself, with a growing body of scientific knowledge, while acknowledging the value of incorporating knowledge from other sciences. Nursing science is unique, with a particular concern for the factors that affect human wellness, but it draws from any and all of the broader realms of theoretical and scientific thought that can contribute to the nursing body of knowledge (AACN Essentials, 2006; as cited in Zaccagnini & Pechacek, 2021, p. 6).

Preparation to address current and future practice issues requires a strong scientific foundation for practice. The scientific foundation of nursing practice has expanded and includes a focus on both the natural and social sciences…In addition, philosophical, ethical, and historical issues inherent in the development of science create a context for the application of the natural and social sciences. Nursing science also has created a significant body of knowledge to guide nursing practice and has expanded the scientific underpinnings of the discipline (AACN Essentials, 2006, p. 9 as cited in Zaccagnini & Pechacek, 2021, p. 6).

DNP graduates possess a wide array of knowledge gleaned from the sciences and have the ability to translate that knowledge quickly and effectively to benefit patients in the daily demands of practice environments (Porter-O’Grady, 2003 as cited in AACN Essentials, 2006, p.9).

Instructions and Grading Guideline

  • DNP graduates are expected to understand the scientific underpinnings of practice, including the basic sciences (sciences that are traditionally associated with the medical model).
  • Concerns have been raised that advanced nursing practitioners “adopt the practice values of medicine rather than identifying and adopting knowledge, skills, values, meaning and experiences unique to this nursing specialty (Webber, 2008 p. 466).
  • For this discussion forum, the DNP student is to review The Essentials of Doctoral Education for Advanced Nursing Practice (2006) and the assigned reading to synthesize the following: https://www.aacnnursing.org/DNP/DNP-Essentials
