The Purpose Of Education

The real value of a real education… has almost nothing to do with knowledge, and everything to do with simple awareness; awareness of what is so real and essential, so hidden in plain sight all around us, all the time, that we have to keep reminding ourselves over and over: ‘This is water. This is water.’

-David Foster Wallace

What is the purpose of a college education? This has been and will continue to be, one of the fundamental questions facing the future of higher education.

In an article for the New York Times, philosophy professor Kwame Anthony Appiah offers us two models: Is it “utilitarian”- to prepare students for a particular job or career path, or is it “utopian”- shaping students’ character and values to prepare them not just to be good workers, but also good thinkers, good citizens, and positive contributors to our local, national, and global societies?

In this module, we learned a lot about the value of general education skills, like writing, ethical reasoning, and quantitative reasoning, for students’ current and future career paths. Excelsior’s general education career competencies even include “career” right in the title to emphasize their utilitarian value. But is that the only value of general education? Is that the only value of an education in general?

  • What do you believe the true purpose of a college education is today? What do you think it will be in the future?
  • Do you believe colleges have a responsibility to teach concepts like “global understanding” and “cultural diversity and expression”? Why or why not?
  • If you have already completed some of your general education requirements, what did you take away from the experience? If you have some left to complete, what do you hope to get out of general education at Excelsior?

Your post should include at least one outside source (and an accompanying citation) to support your points.

Annotated Bibliography And Source Evaluation

Week 5 Source Evaluation Worksheet

First read the notes that begin on p. 3 of this handout and the table that follows. Then, complete the analysis for each of your sources.

Part 1: Annotation

Using APA format, identify the source and write a concise annotation that summarizes the central theme and scope of the book or article. A sample annotation can be found in the directions for this assignment.

Annotation 1

Annotation 2

(Continue for as many annotations as you have developed)

Example: Annotation 1

Waite, L. J., Goldschneider, F. K., & Witsberger, C. (1986). Nonfamily living and t he erosion of traditional family orientations among young adults. American Sociological Review, 51, 541-554.

The authors, researchers at the Rand Corporation and Brown University, use data from the National Longitudinal Surveys of Young Women and Young Men to test their hypothesis that nonfamily living by young adults alters their attitudes, values, plans, and expectations, moving them away from their belief in traditional sex roles. They find their hypothesis strongly supported in young females, while the effects were fewer in studies of young males. Increasing the time away from parents before marrying increased individualism, self-sufficiency, and changes in attitudes about families. In contrast, an earlier study by Williams cited below shows no significant gender differences in sex role attitudes as a result of nonfamily living

Part 2: Source Evaluation

Use the following criteria to evaluate each source:

a. How current is this the source you are using? (If not current – explain why information is still applicable)

Source 1

Source 2

(Continue for as many sources as you have developed)

Example 2a

2a. While this source is not current, it has formed the basis for numerous follow-up studies and it frequently cited in the literature; it has both historical value and also serves as a base-point for tracking changing attitudes.

b. How authoritative, credible, reliable? (For example: recognized expert; peer-reviewed journal; trusted site such as .edu, .gov, .mil; experienced and knowledgeable in the field; information consistent across several sources, etc.)

Source 1

Source 2

(Continue for as many sources as you have developed)

Example 2b

2b. This is a scholarly source; the source is credible, reliable and authoritative. The authors were experts in their fields, published their study in a peer-reviewed journal, and the study has held up under rigorous scrutiny by other experts in the field.

c. Briefly state specifically how this source provides evidence that strongly supports your conclusion. For example, “the article discusses significant evidence that this diet provides all essential nutrients and supports my view that the diet is healthy” “this study shows that this diet is deficient in vitamin D and supports my point that this diet is not healthy” “this survey revealed that obesity is on a rapid rise among all demographic groups and supports my view that obesity is epidemic”

Source 1

Source 2

(Continue for as many sources as you have developed)

Example 2c

2c. This source strongly supports my thesis that the current pattern of young adults remaining with family because they cannot afford independent living due to student loan obligations is having a negative effect on young adults developing self-sufficiency and individualism.

d. If the information is “popular” or if it is from a blog, from a marketing site, or is persuasive in nature (i.e., an editorial or opinion piece, or a publication of a special interest group such as a trade organization, union, etc.) explain why you are using the source and why you cannot use a more substantive or scholarly source.

Source 1

Source 2

(Continue for as many sources as you have developed)

Example 2d

2d. This source is popular; it is used to show how public opinion was influenced by advertising.

Notes: Evaluating Sources

  1. In 2b, rate your journal and periodical sources (whether you are looking at hard copy or on-line) as scholarly, substantive or popular. The Table “Distinguishing between Scholarly and Non-scholarly Periodicals” will work for evaluating either print or on-line journals, newspapers, and periodicals.
  2. Beware of bias in any specific article. Determine if the source is authoritative, credible, reliable, current and unbiased. (If not current, then information can be rated “valid, regardless of age,” — i.e., a 1999 web-based article on the American Civil War is not “current,” but can be “valid regardless of age.”) All sources should be authoritative, credible, reliable, current and unbiased. If bias is found, state if bias may or may not affect the credibility and reliability of the information you will use and how you will compensate for possible bias.
  3. For websites, generally speaking, .gov and .mil sites are acceptable sources in academic papers. Most .edu websites will be acceptable, but analyze under the criteria in 2 above.
  4. If the website is a .com, .org or .biz website, you must further evaluate for authority, reliability and credibility. Never use a .com, .org or .biz site without evaluating across these criteria. Be especially careful about blogs – generally speaking, don’t use them. Many newspaper and magazines also publish to websites; evaluate those just as you would a journal or periodical.
    1. Authoritative
      • Who are the author(s)?
      • Are they recognized experts in their field? – check the <About> column or google the author’s name?
      • What is the level of education of the author? Experience? Knowledge of the subject?
      • Is the information at a level appropriate to an upper-level academic paper?
    2. Credible
      • How does the information compare to other, similar information? Always look for more than one source – verify that all points of view are represented
    3. Reliable
      • Is it timely?
      • Does it come from a trusted source?

Social Security is a program that the public pays into then later draws from after they retire. The Social Security Act of 1935 created a social insurance program to protect individuals and their families from adverse events. Individuals paid small amounts from each check. Benefits were intended to balance itself out as some individuals would never use the funds they put in, while other most likely would need more than what their premium was for. The amount you receive is calculated from the amounts you have contributed throughout your employment career when you reached their set age of retirement (U.S. Social Security Administration).

Public assistance programs are programs to support the public when they do not have the resources to support themselves. These programs are ones where individuals must fit a set of criteria to qualify for the benefits.

These differences are important for all workers to understand because public assistance programs are there for all individuals. Regardless of the person’s work history, some programs will not allow for assistance if the individual makes too much. This is also important for workers to understand so that they can get their clients involved with the correct programs that will meet the clients needs.

RE: Discussion 1 – Week 5

A significant difference between social security and public assistance programs, is that social security is meant to provide monthly income for individuals that are of retirement age. Whereas public assistance programs are generally in place and meant to benefit those in a time of need due to various factors. (Popples & Leighninger, 2019)

Title II “Federal Old-Age Benefits”, of the Social Security Act is what people generally understand to be the primary intention of the program. It is a program that taxpayers pay into based on their income. Then when the taxpayer turns 65 and retires, they will receive a monthly income.  (Popples & Leighninger, 2019)

It is important to note that there are welfare programs built into social security that are in place to assist individuals when they are in a time of need, like other public assistance programs.  In my opinion there is far less of a negative perception surrounding social security benefits. I believe this is because most people understand social security’s primary function is to distribute funds to retired individuals who have spent their life working. Often the stigma for public assistance programs is that it is there to serve those unwilling to work.  In my opinion I think this is a distinct and unfair difference in perception of the programs.  As, at their core both programs are meant to financially assist people in a time of need.

For this discussion, I will be describing the African American population and how they may be disenfranchised by the social security program. According to data from the United States Census Bureau, African Americans make up approximately 13.4% of the close to 332 million persons living in the United States (United States Census Bureau, 2020). Spriggs and Furman reported that some 4.8 million African Americans receive some sort of Social Security benefits.

There are several reasons why there may be disparities in the benefits that African Americans receive from Social Security. One of those reasons is due to the fact that African Americans tend to have lower income overall. Social Security benefits are dependent on one’s income over their lifetime. In turn, when African Americans are earning less over subsequently, their Social Security benefits will be less. In addition, this leaves less income for African Americans to place any money in other types of retirement savings plans making African Americans more reliant on their lower social security benefits (Hendley & Bilimoria, 1999). This disparity in income places millions African Americans at greater risk for poverty.

RE: Discussion 2 – Week 5

A population that may be disenfranchised by the Social Security program may be those who are living in the United States unlawfully, or individuals known as undocumented immigrants. In describing this population, most of these individuals are part of the Hispanic/Latinx population. According to research conducted by Whitman, Reznik, and Shoffner (2011), utilizing projections from the Modeling Income in the Near-Term microsimulation model and concentrating on individuals who are of Social Security receiving age, around four percent of the population in the United States will not receive Social Security benefits. This percentage disproportionately includes women, Hispanic/Latinx individuals, and immigrants.

As further noted by Torres-Gil, et al. (2005), even though it is highly beneficial to them, many Hispanic immigrants, primarily women, will never received Social Security benefits because of the stipulations and requirements associated with receiving those benefits. Unfortunately, “Without Social Security, over half of elderly Hispanics would live in poverty; [because of] Social Security, less than a fifth [of Hispanics] do” (Torres-Gil, et al., 2005, p. 2). Many Hispanic individuals, as a result of their potential immigration status or other disparate conditions, do not receive the Social Security benefits that others, including citizens and legal immigrants, receive. Many Hispanics or members of the Latinx population also have, according to Torres-Gil, et al. (2005), larger families and longer life expectancies, further disenfranchising them from Social Security benefits.
