Bad Experience: What I know about the Healthcare System in the United States

Introduction

In the current world, there are a lot of changes with the health care. There are many advances in technology that is helping to improve the efficiency of work from the health providers. The administration is also working towards improving the status of places like nursing homes for the aged making sure that they are very comfortable with their stay there. Hospitals are also working hard to ensure that the patient’s health is their highest priority and putting all their efforts and available resources to help them in their recovery. According to Michelle (2016), the health care system in developed countries has been improved substantially. Also, the government has taken measure to ensure that everyone regardless of status or aged can be treated, especially for the emerging diseases like cancer. In developing countries health issues have not yet been dealt properly and most people end up spending a lot of money to look for treatment by flying abroad, which in most cases not taken care of by their insurance. There are also few specialists in these countries making it difficult for patients to get proper treatment.

Bad healthcare experience

I would like to share thoughts about good experiences and frustrations about healthcare that I have seen in over few years. I feel that the United States healthcare system has become money oriented with the insurance companies using it as a way to make a profit. The pharmaceuticals have also played a significant role in the rise of medical cost. I remember in the year 2014 I had to look for a lawyer to push for the insurance company to pay for my medical bills. The insurance company had refused on the basis that since I had defaulted once to pay for the cover they could not settle my bills unless I clear the payment for the policy plus additional charges as a penalty. The greedy lawyers took this opportunity as a way of filling their pockets.

According to me, I feel that the insurance rates are high and thus problematic to many people like me who are not working or are earning a little money. The people who have had a family history of the medical problem and are not working in large companies or business find it difficult to access insurance coverage. There are many cases brought in television showing several individuals who have been denied insurance cover because of their family medical background. There is an instance where one was forced to pay higher for insurance because her parents were diabetic. This problem can be dealt with by making insurance more affordable to citizens by improving communication system between the insurance companies and the health care providers. This can reduce waste for approval and the adoption of technology can reduce the paperwork that is costly and inefficient.

I have also encountered a friend who lost her father due to the use of a drug that was being marketed though it has not been approved for use. Some pharmaceuticals companies are knowingly releasing drugs that are not fit consumers. The massive marketing campaigns by these manufacturers lead to usage of unapproved drugs that end up causing health problems. My question is, does the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) doing its job effectively? The prescription of drugs with unapproved uses raises the chances of death.

The patient claimed that their employer got access to such information without consent, which is unethical despite the expected privacy of information agreement with the hospital (uOttawa, 2016). It was discovered that the employer is in the Healthcare industry and as such could access such information but not use it for non-medical purposes. In another case an elderly patient under the Long term stay in hospital program due to old age diseases contracted a Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) while under the hospital care (uOttawa, 2016). This resulted in litigation against the hospital from the patient’s relations for negligence. Additionally, other bad experiences have also been evident.  […]
